We rarely think of procrastination as a spiritual issue.
It feels harmless. Common. Almost funny.
“I’ll get to it tomorrow.”
“Someday, when things calm down…”
“Eventually, I’ll take that next step.”
But over time, procrastination becomes a silent thief.
It steals our growth.
It delays obedience.
It keeps us stuck in what could have been.
The truth is,
procrastination is often disobedience in disguise.
“Now this is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Give careful thought to your ways… You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little.’”
—Haggai 1:5, 9
In the book of Haggai, the people had returned from exile. God told them to rebuild the temple. But instead, they built their own houses, managed their fields, and said, “The time has not yet come.” (Haggai 1:2)
Sound
familiar?
“It’s not the right season.”
“I’ll follow through once life gets easier.”
“I’ll say yes to God—just not yet.”
Why We Procrastinate
Procrastination usually masks deeper issues:
Fear — What if I fail?
Perfectionism — I don’t want to start until I can do it right.
Laziness — It’s easier to scroll than serve.
Distraction — I meant to read my Bible,
but I got lost in my inbox.
Comfort — I know I should change, but staying the same feels easier.
But here's the hard truth: delayed obedience is still disobedience.
“Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn’t do it, sins.” —James 4:17
The Spiritual Cost of “Later”
When we delay what God is calling us to do today, we miss out on:
The fruit He wants to grow in us
The people
He wants to bless through us
The peace that comes from walking in step with Him
Like the Israelites in Haggai’s day, we end up working hard but seeing little fruit.
“You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it.” —Haggai 1:6
It’s not that God is punishing us. It’s that He loves us too much to let us stay half-hearted.
How to Slay the Giant of Procrastination
Get honest about your delay.
What are you
putting off? Is it a conversation? A decision? A spiritual step? Name it.
Ask what’s underneath.
Is it fear? Pride? Busyness? Be willing to let the Holy Spirit reveal what’s really holding you back.
Take the first small step.
Don’t wait to feel ready. Just start. God often meets us after we move, not before.
Stop waiting for perfect conditions.
“Whoever watches the wind will not plant; whoever
looks at the clouds will not reap.” —Ecclesiastes 11:4
Perfect timing is a myth. The right time is now.
Remember who’s calling you.
This isn’t about pressure—it’s about purpose. God’s not asking you to earn His favor. He’s inviting you into a better story.
