Why did God order Israel to destroy all its enemies without mercy?
Deuteronomy 7 is one of the most troubling—and most misunderstood—chapters in the Bible. In this Bible Studies for Life teaching, we face the hard questions head-on instead of editing the Bible to make it more comfortable.
Why would a loving God command Israel to show “no mercy”?
How do we reconcile the warrior God of the
Old Testament with Jesus’ command to love our enemies?
And what does all of this have to do with our own struggle against sin today?
Walking carefully through Deuteronomy 7:1–16, we explore three key purposes behind God’s command: to punish entrenched evil, to protect Israel from spiritual corruption, and to provide an example for us. Along the way, we look at God’s long patience with the Canaanites, His faithfulness to His covenant, and the sobering truth that partial
obedience often leads to spiritual compromise.
This lesson doesn’t dodge the emotional weight of the text. Confusion, anger, sadness, and fear are all welcomed into the conversation. But we also discover a deeper call: God’s people are not to make peace with sin. We are to drive it out.
