Fear is a thief.
It steals our sleep. It hijacks our joy. It whispers lies in the middle of the night and keeps us from stepping into the life God has planned for us. Some of us fear failure. Others fear sickness, loss, or rejection. We worry about our kids, our finances, the state of the world. The names may change, but the story is the same: fear takes up residence in our hearts and starts calling the
shots.
But here’s the good news: fear can be slain.
Not by pretending it isn’t there. Not by puffing up with false bravado. But by doing what God’s people have always done—trusting the God who is bigger than whatever we fear.
What Does the Bible Say About Fear?
Over and over, Scripture echoes this command: “Do not be afraid.” In fact, some have said it’s the most repeated command in the Bible.
“Do not
be afraid… The Lord your God is the one who goes with you. He will never leave you nor forsake you.” —Deuteronomy 31:6
God doesn’t just tell us not to fear—He gives us reasons not to. In Deuteronomy 1, the Israelites stood on the edge of the Promised Land. The giants were real. The obstacles were enormous. But the promise was bigger:
“Do not be terrified; do not be afraid of them. The Lord your God, who is going before you, will fight for you.” (Deuteronomy
1:29–30)
Why Fear Persists
Fear distorts reality. It tells us the danger is bigger than God’s power. It makes us forget His past faithfulness. Like the spies who came back from Canaan saying, “We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes” (Numbers 13:33), we let fear shrink our courage and cloud our vision.
And when we forget who fights for us, we stop moving forward.
How to Slay the Giant of Fear
Name your fear.
Don’t fight
shadows. Drag your fears into the light and name them. What are you afraid of? Be honest with God—and yourself.
Remember who God is.
Review the times He’s been faithful. Remind yourself of His character. He is strong, He is near, and He is not surprised by what you’re facing.
Feed your faith, not your fear.
Faith and fear grow in the same soil: your thoughts. What are you rehearsing? What are you meditating on? Replace anxious thoughts with
Scripture. Memorize verses like 2 Timothy 1:7:
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”
Take a step forward.
Fear wants to freeze you. Faith moves. Do the next right thing—even if your knees are trembling.
Lean into community.
You don’t have to face fear alone. Surround yourself with people who will remind you of the truth, pray with you, and point you back to
God’s promises.
