Disciple making teachers set an example

Jesus said,
  • John 13:15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.
Paul echoed this in saying:
  • Acts 26:29 “Short time or long—I pray to God that not only you but all who are listening to me today may become what I am, except for these chains.”
  • 1 Corinthians 11:1 Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.
  • Philippians 4:9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.
Disciplemakers set an example.
Edgar Guest wrote a memorable poem on this. The first verse goes:
I'd rather see a sermon than hear one any day;
I'd rather one should walk with me than merely tell the way.
The eye is a better pupil, more willing than the ear;
Fine counsel is confusing, but example is always clear,
And the best of all the preachers are the men who live their creeds,
For to see a good put in action is what everybody needs.

I have just released a new video on the importance of the teacher saying to his/her students: follow my example as I follow the example of Christ. Pray as I pray. Give as I give. Rejoice as I rejoice. Be content as I am content. Love as I love. Serve as I serve.
This may seem arrogant, but to do otherwise is to admit, “Christianity has not worked for me; I hope you have better luck.”
