Changing by accidentOkay, I don’t really believe in accidents. I believe in the sovereign God working out His plan. But, He doesn’t always tell us what that plan is ahead of time. Following God is always a bit mysterious. We are all a bit like Abraham, following God to who knows where. This is what is wrong with a lot of strategic planning. Strategic planning works like this. We set a goal. We break it down into action steps. We set a budget. We recruit personnel. We break the whole big goal into bite-size pieces and assign a little bit to each person. Now, of course, there is a place for this. There is a place for planning. There is a place for breaking down a big goal into little pieces. Yard by yard life is hard, inch by inch it’s a cinch. I get that. But often, following God is about what I call, “ministry by opportunity.” It is about, in the words of Henry Blackaby, “Discovering where God is at work, and joining Him.” Here is a great example. |
