The most Heavenly minded do the most earthly goodThe Bible commands us to, “Set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.” Colossians 3:1 (NIV) The word translated set is a strong one and is most commonly translated seek as it is in these verses:
The word is used in Luke 15:8 to describe the woman who searched for the lost coin. The New Living puts it this way, “Set your sights on the realities of Heaven.” Why set your heart on Heaven? Some fear if we are too Heavenly minded we will be of no earthly good. Randy Alcorn quotes Lewis in addressing this concern. “If you read history, you will find that the Christians who did the most for the present world were just those who thought the most of the next. The Apostles, themselves, who set ablaze the conversion of the Roman Empire, the great men who built up the Middle Ages, the English Evangelicals who abolished the Slave Trade, all left their mark on Earth, precisely because their minds were occupied with Heaven. It is since Christians have largely ceased to think of the other world that they have become so ineffective in this. Aim at Heaven and you will get earth ‘thrown in’: aim at earth and you will get neither.” Every Christian ought to be looking, longing, and living for Heaven! Billy Sunday once said, “If we could get a real appreciation of what Heaven is like, we would all be so homesick for Heaven, the devil wouldn’t have a friend left on earth.” John MacArthur: “We don't seek to escape this life by dreaming of heaven. But we do find we can endure this life because of the certainty of heaven.” It would be impossible for God to give us an exhaustive description of what Heaven is going to be like. The Bible says, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, nor has entered into the heart of man those things which God prepared for those who love him” (1 Corinthians 2:9). Fully understanding Heaven is beyond our imagination. But, it never hurts to try.
