Change your church like you eat an elephant

Change is normally about trying a thousand things and keeping what works.

I love the word experiment. Use it often. Don’t say, “We are going to change.” Say, “We are going to experiment with something just this one Sunday.”

I love this story. The preacher goes to a church. The pulpit is on the side of the stage. He thinks it should be in the middle. It is a symbolic thing. The Word of God should be central. He moves the pulpit to the center. He gets fired. Is anyone surprised by this?

Next pastor comes. Two years later the pastor who got fired visits his old church. To his surprise, the pulpit is solidly in the center of the stage. Everyone seems happy about it. He asks the new pastor how he was able to pull off this change. “They fired me for moving the pulpit. How did you get it moved?”

Three inches per week.
