Johnny Hunt: We become what we behold

We are changed by beholding. We are changed to become what we look at, concentrate on, stare at.

We are changed all at once in salvation. We are being changed, from one glory to another. We are changed to live ever more glorious and God-glorifying lives. But, we will never be perfect. We will be changed when we see Him. “Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.” 1 John 3:2 (NKJV) From start to finish, we are changed by beholding. We become what we look at.

We see it in everyday life.

Scientists have confirmed what a lot of us have observed: couples start to look alike over the years. People actually come to look like the person they look at.

This has been tested with portraits of longtime couples: One set of pictures was taken on their wedding day and another set twenty-five years later. Presented with separate portraits of these men and women, human subjects were asked to match them on similarity.

For the set taken at an older age, they had no trouble deciding who was married to whom. But for the pictures taken at a younger age, subjects flunked the task. Married couples resemble each other, therefore, not because they pick partners who look like them, but because their features converge over the years. The similarity was strongest for couples who reported the greatest happiness. Daily sharing of emotions apparently leads one partner to “internalize” the other, and vice versa, to the point that anyone can see how much they belong together.
