Assume they are not interested

I have started too many Bible Studies this way: turn in your Bibles in 2 Chronicles 6 and read the first ten verses.

This fine as long as you are speaking to reasonably mature Christians who are basically interested in learning the Bible. If you want to “make the teaching about God our Savior attractive” (Titus 2:10b NIV) you want to do more. Here is what I mean.

Come up with a title that is written so that if you posted it on Facebook saying, “This week in Bible study we will be talking about. . .” people would want to come. While you are at it, put it on Facebook! Make the title sound like a lead article to Reader’s Digest and give biblical answers. Here are some examples:

·         Three steps to get control of your finances

·         How to worry less than you do.

·         Three keys to better relationships

·         What to do when you are insulted

·         Forgiving whenit is hard to forgive

I plan to start writing title like these to the lessons I write, rather than the more generic titles like, “Lesson #1.” It will be a few months, before you start to see these changes take effect. If you would like to volunteer to go back and write compelling titles to old series I have written, please let me know.
