No one looked at their watchesThey loved him or the hated him. The wanted to crown
him king. They wanted to (and did) crucify him. No one looked at their
watches. Jesus’ teaching was exciting. It was intriguing. It captured their
attention and imagination. They got mad. They loved. They were confused.
They argued. Jesus teaching caused an uproar. Jesus was controversial and
never boring. Consider these words:
When he said these things, the people were again divided in their opinions
about him. Some said, “He’s demon possessed and out of his mind. Why listen
to a man like that?” Others said, “This doesn’t sound like a man possessed
by a demon! Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?” John 10:19–21 (NLT) Does this describe the response to your teaching? Does
it describe the last Bible Study Group you went to? “When Aeschines spoke, they said, ‘How well he speaks.’
But when Demosthenes spoke, they said, ‘Let us march against Philip.’”[1]
Jesus was more like Demosthenes. People were ready to march. Consider Matthew 7:28 (NIV): When Jesus had finished
saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching.
