“Your Christian world feels like these are the two alternatives:

  • “Believe the Bible and be mean.
  • “Deny the Bible and be loving.

“And because most won’t outright deny the Bible the way this professor did, they are forced to assume that believing the Bible must be accompanied by an intolerant, hateful spirit.”

Gulp.

Is it possible to believe in truth passionately and to accept others with grace?

“What they need,” Abdullah continued, “is what I see in you. You believe everything the Bible says. You believe that when I die I will not go to heaven. Even still, you have a charitable spirit toward me and my family and genuinely want to be my friend.”

Abdullah is absolutely right, of course. But his idea isn’t a very politically correct one.

The prevailing idea today is that the only path to peaceful dialogue is through compromise. Through holding your beliefs less strongly. The more we act like we all believe the same things, the more we’ll get along. But as Abdullah knew, that’s not dialogue. That’s delusion.

Is it possible to believe in truth passionately and to accept others with grace?
